Reconstruction and expansion of Kazan International Airport

Kazan is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rus- sia, and an important industrial, trade and cultural centre with a population over 1 million people. The city hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade and will host the 2014 World Fencing Championships. With getting the new terminal operational in November 2012, Kazan International airport received the opportunity to accept aircrafts of all types and to serve a huge stream of passengers, meeting the needs of the renovated town at the level of every world capital.

The architectural part of the project “Reconstruction and development of International Airport Kazan – Terminal 1A” was developed on the basis of:
– Master plan for the development of the airport in Kazan;
– Project assignment;
– The regulations going on the territory of Russian Federation in accordance with the International standards (IATA Airoport Development Reference Manual 9th Edition, ICAO);

Purpose:
– Construction of the new Terminal 1A, with traffic capacity 600 passengers per hour, reaching levels of comfort “C” IATA and securing the international requirements for organization of the 100% automatic tri-state control, and a review of the baggage of the departing and transit passengers;
– An increase of income from non-aviation activity. Commercial areas in the new terminal 1A should represent around 15% of the total area of the terminal, without taking the cilculation areas (hallways, passageways, stairways) and technical premises;
– Project of terminal landside area including the construction of a car park for 400 cars and indoor parking for 227 cars, with the maximum use of the terrain.

The following buildings and facilities are included in the project’s:
– Terminal 1A;
– Indoor parking lot;
– Technological buildings:
а) transformer station with diesel generator
б) steam station
в) chiller station
Architectural appearance and aesthetics

The terminal has a basic volume of 132x53,60 m, combining in itself functional areas for departing and arriving passengers on domestic and international lines and two side sleeves with dimensions 25.60 x56,60 m, organically added to them. The height of the main volume is 19.40 m, the height of the side sleeves – 11.05 m, which allows the opportunity to provide maximum natural lighting of the common areas.
In the central common area of the terminal on the first level are located a snack-bar, offices of tour operators, aviation companies, banking center, telephone booths, baggage compartments, smoking saloon, insurance office, lounges for departing, arriving, and on the second level coffee-bar and a "fast food" restaurant, health centre, room for mothers with children, a prayer room and all the other premises, according to the project assignment.Reinforced concrete structures and the pages of the building are determined by a steel skeleton. The roof of the building is fulfilled out of a steel structure. The construction of the main volume is executed of metal elements with dimensions 12x52 m with full visibility, which gives the whole space harmonious and aesthetically pleasing look. The side sleeves will also be fulfilled by a metal construction with a distance between the bearings 12/12 m. The glazing of the main parts of the terminal is executed through suspended facade (SCHUCO/VIS-TVS, Jansen or similar) with sunscreen elements (SCHUCO or similar), with a horizontal aluminum cover and vertically with silicone, and in the side sleeves (which include a basic premises for baggage handling) is provided for installation of suspended lining, performed by ceramic, stone or ceramic granite (ARGETON) in combination with glass. Around the whole building is provided a pavement with 0.12 m denivelation (elevation 126.18 m) in respect of elevation ±0.00 (126.30 m) of the terminal.

The main operational area of the terminal, guaranteeing the distribution of the passengers’ stream, is designed on the first level. On the second level are located the administrative premises of the various offices at the airport:
• Offices of tour operators;
• Office of aviation safety;
• Organization of transport;
• Maintenance of the internal engineering networks;
• Border control;
• Customs control;
• System to service passengers;
• Server and technical premises.

A prayer room is provided on the second floor. All legally required sanitary and household premises for the staff are assured. For access to the administrative second level are provided 4 staircases and two elevators, ensuring smooth movement of the disabled persons. Two stairwells are located on the side facades and have immediate connection with the external space, in the case of an emergency situation.
At the level of departure from the terminal landside area are designed visors of lightweight metal structures. Similar visors are located on the facade, from the platform above the entrance in the hall of arriving, to the passport control, and above the exit for boarding onto the platform bus. Blind surfaces of the facade are ventilated facades, lined with eternit composite panels (for example, type Appolic), color RAL 9011. The plinth along the perimeter of the building is executed with ceramic granite, color anthracite.
